Death, blood, struggle await me. But freedom is worth all this, I am only a slave but I will be able to earn a new life. I will turn the tension that paralyses me into strength.

Rudis is dedicated to one great virtue: strength. Rudis is the name of the trophy given to the gladiators who won in the arena, a wooden sword, which was an instrument but also a symbol of freedom: the gladiator is no longer a slave! To overcome his fear before entering the arena, the gladiator was stunned with dried fruit cider and marc. But why are we talking about gladiators in the 21st century? Massimo Nobile thinks that today all professionals and small entrepreneurs have their own battle to face and win. That's why we created a fragrance that gave energy for this battle, mentally and physically.

The perfume inspired by this object, therefore, had to be a game of contrasts that alternated simultaneously: strength and sweetness, battle and freedom, life and death, virility and weakness. The box is very precious: only five craftsmen in the world are able to work leather in this way. The realisation process takes a long time and starts by taking the skin and soaking it. Then, with a piece of wood in the same shape as the bottle used as a guide, they take the skin still wet and wrap the first side around the wood and bake it in the oven. The next step is to dip the skin again, following the same process for each side and for the curves that form the box. After this complicated process, the seams of the stitches are not noticed and the skin is as compact as a piece of wood. In the last step, it is lacquered and cut into slices before being worked internally. The box can only be closed one way, depending on how it was cut. There are two points to guide you to properly close the lid.

Everything started with Umberto Nobile, Massimo’s grandfather, a name that has always been synonymous with luxury fragrances. Since the early 30s he represented Nina Ricci perfumes and in 1942, at the height of the Second World War, he decided to open a perfumery for his wife in Rome. It became a family tradition: Massimo’s father did the same for his wife in Naples and also Massimo’s brother, who fell in love with a woman from tuscany, opened a perfumery for his wife.

Moved by love of beautiful things and by passion handed down from father to son, Massimo did something different. In 2004, when Acqua di Parma was acquired by LVMH group, he decided to create with his wife Stefania a brand that represented the Italian elegance worldwide. We’ve never followed trends: the main example of this is in 2011, when the western world of perfumery went crazy for agarwood, we launched La Danza delle Libellule, a vanilla perfume, that became our best seller worldwide. What is important is to keep our sober elegance, that can stand up over time, to meet our customers’ expectations. The first fragrance was Pontevecchio, created in 2004 and distributed in 2005, which marked the beginning of Nobile 1942’s in the new millennium.

We can proudly say that we are one of few companies producing and packaging by hand “in house” our fragrance products. We do this job with care and dedication: all the perfume bottles are filled one by one handily in our laboratory in Genova. In addition to the Italian ingredients, such as bergamot from Calabria and Iris from Florence, we purchase raw materials from where we know they offer the best quality.

But above all, all our ingredients respect high quality standards and the natural process of maceration. Italian excellence always captures our attention: we always look for new artists and artisans that create something unique. We use Damask silk from Lorsica, hand blown glass from Altare, silver filigree from Campo Ligure, Leather from Tuscany. Nobile 1942 perfumes are masterpieces of Italian artisan work.
